Four fans’ videos of Bortoleto’s huge sprint race crash at Interlagos

Gabriel Bortoleto sustained a 57G impact when he crashed at high-speed, metres in front of packed grandstands at the end of yesterday’s sprint race at Interlagos.

Footage shot by some of the fans in the stands shows how powerful the impact was and the shock which greeted it.

Bortoleto was unhurt in the crash. However his team were unable to prepare a fresh chassis for him in time for the start of qualifying, meaning he will start today’s Brazilian Grand Prix from the back of the grid.

Bortoleto’s crash

The Sauber driver lost control of his car as he tried to overtake Alexander Albon on the final lap of the race. He struck a wall on the inside of the first corner at the Senna ‘S’, then became briefly airborne before hurtling into a barrier on the opposite side of the circuit.

Bortoleto’s race engineer Jose Manuel Lopez asked the driver several times if he had been hurt before Bortoleto replied: “Yep, I’m okay.”

Nico Hulkenberg in the other Sauber was running behind Bortoleto at the time of the crash and was shocked by the impact. “Oh fuck, big one Gabi there, fuck,” he exclaimed as he drove past. “Gabi’s okay, Nico, Gabi is okay,” his race engineer Stephen Petrik reassured him shortly afterwards.

Isack Hadjar was running immediately behind Bortoleto when he crashed and his car was hit by some of the debris from the Sauber. After passing Alexander Albon’s similarly damaged Williams at Descida do Lago, Hadjar said: “That was bad. Is he fine, mate?”

“I don’t know yet,” replied race engineer Pierre Hamelin at first. Then he added: “He’s okay.”

Bortoleto’s manager Fernando Alonso was running ahead of him when the crash happened. Alonso’s race engineer Andrew Vizard told him: “that Bortoleto shunt, turn one, he’s okay, he is out of the car.”

Alonso appeared to have seen the crash aftermath on the screens around the circuit. “Wow,” he remarked. “Big one, looks like.”

Piastri, Hulkenberg and Colapinto’s crashes

Earlier in the race Oscar Piastri, Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto all crashed separately at the same corner on the same lap, as these videos captured:

Lawson and Bearman’s collision

Oliver Bearman was also knocked into a spin by Liam Lawson at Descida do Lago. The stewards penalised Lawson five seconds for this and gave Bearman the same penalty for forcing the Racing Bulls driver off the track on the approach to the corner.
