Is Christian McCaffrey Injured? A Look at Whether the 49ers Star Is Hurt After Slow Start in Week 10 vs. Rams

Despite the injuries plaguing the San Francisco 49ers roster, the one exception to the rule so far this year has been the player who walked into the season with arguably the most doubts associated with him, Christian McCaffrey.

The superstar running back missed most of last season with mounting injuries that required a trip to Germany to see specialists as well. This year, he has been the picture of perfect health and has put up some incredible numbers. However, in a have-it divisional game against the Los Angeles Rams, his first-half performance was underwhelming to say the least.

What Happened to Christian McCaffrey?

Continuously acting as the focal point of the 49ers’ offense without the presence of Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, George Kittle, and even quarterback Brock Purdy for large swathes of the season, McCaffrey has been a true one-man wrecking crew.

However, facing the Rams, his numbers took a significant dip. As the team trailed 21-7, he had seven carries to his name, but just 14 rushing yards on those attempts. Additionally, he was targeted four separate times, adding three catches to his tally for 12 receiving yards.

Ranked eighth among the running backs in the league based on PFSN’s RB Impact, his numbers have been spectacular throughout the year. Becoming a premium pass catcher in their hour of need, McCaffrey has totaled 626 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 61 receptions this year.

On the ground, he’s continued his excellence, with 596 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 168 carries. However, what has stood out is the 3.5 yards per carry, which is far and away the worst mark of his career.

Additionally, his season-high for a single rushing attempt this year is only 16 yards. Rather than an indictment of the superstar talent, it has been a direct result of the opposing defense’s complete focus being centered on him.
