Welsh TV presenter Gethin Jones couldn’t resist poking fun at TNT Sports presenter Craig Doyle after Sam Warburton tackled him to the ground on live television. Warburton, Doyle and Dan Biggar were fronting TNT’s coverage of Wales vs Argentina on Sunday afternoon and before kick-off, the trio decided to conduct a practical demonstration of the jackal.
During his playing career, an area that Warburton dominated was the rucks, so he naturally led the explanation of a jackal to the Wales vs Argentina audience, for anyone unfamiliar with the breakdown practice. With Steve Tandy coming from his previous role as Scotland’s defence coach, Warburton explained that there will be a greater focus and hunger on the defensive side of the game for Wales in his tenure going forward.
Of course, it wasn’t to be for Wales on the day, who conceded seven tries, and it was a record loss against Los Pumas. While a pessimist may dismiss the entire Wales performance, there were periods when Cymru defended very well and held out against a world-class Argentina outfit, with Warburton pointing out the team’s resilience in the closing stages.
Captain Jac Morgan performed a tide-turning jackal turnover at one point, exemplifying Warburton’s point that was made prior to the match about the importance of this action in the game. “Just for the audience that haven’t watched rugby too much,” began Warburton.
“There are textbook ways you can win the ball back. Number one we are going to go through now is a jackal. How do you win the ball back in contact? We’re going to demo a jackal – you ran into me before, you’re powerful, Craig! So take it easy!” Biggar asked: “Shall I pop you the ball Craig?” as Doyle replied: “Yeah, let’s do this.”

As Warburton explained, Doyle received a pass from Biggar and ran into Warburton, who put him on the floor and began demonstrating a jackal situation with Biggar as the third party.
“I’m going to hit Craig,” said Warburton. “Ooh, he’s powerful!” as Doyle comically attempted to push through Warburton, exclaiming: “Leg drive, leg drive!”
“I’m going to put him down,” continued Warburton. “Now, me and Craig have a bit of beef off-camera, so I’m going to get into him. Anyway! Once the tackle is made, I’ve got to race to get the ball before Dan, who is the attacking player.
“If I can get in with my feet and get that ball before Dan, I can win it. If I don’t win the race, Dan gets there first, I’m a bigger guy, I might eye up someone like Dan who is a little bit smaller, come in and counter-ruck, get him off the ball – Wales have got to make it so difficult. That’s what the big guys tend to do, the backs might approach it a little bit differently…”
At this point, Warburton joked that he and Doyle “had a bit of beef”(Image: TNT SPORTS RUGBY)
Doyle remained on the floor as Warburton continued speaking until the presenter said: “I appear to have some back trouble!” before Warburton helped the Irishman up.
Posting on his Instagram story, fellow presenter Jones included a picture of Doyle on the deck with the caption: “Having a lovely time Craig Doyle (crying laughing emoji).”
