John Cena Defeats Dominik Mysterio To Win WWE Intercontinental Championship

John Cena Wins Intercontinental Championship in Final Boston Appearance

In a shocking opening match on Monday Night Raw, John Cena defeated Dominik Mysterio to win the Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his career. The win came during Cena’s final appearance in his hometown of Boston.

The match was set up in the opening segment of the show when Dominik Mysterio interrupted Cena and Triple H, claiming he was “better than you in your prime.” Triple H then ordered Mysterio to defend his title against the 17-time World Champion.

Dominik Mysterio’s Attempts to Cheat

The champion tried to use underhanded tactics throughout the match. At one point, “Dominik grabbed a chair from outside the ring.” While the referee was distracted checking on an exposed turnbuckle, “Dominik slammed the chair on the mat and he went down so the referee would think Cena hit him with it. However, Cena also went down” to counter the ploy.

The referee, seeing both men down, was perplexed. As he “grabbed the chair… Dominik tried to pull it from him.” This chaos allowed Cena to get Mysterio up for an AA, “but Dominik pushed off and his legs hit the referee which knocked him down.”

A New Champion Crowned

With the referee incapacitated, “Cena caught Dominik in the STF and tapped but the ref was still down.” Mysterio then “grabbed the belt from outside the ring” and “tried to hit Cena with it,” but “Cena ducked, and hit him with an AA.” A second referee ran in but only “counted two.”

Mysterio mounted a final comeback, hitting Cena “with a 619 and followed it up with a frog splash.” However, as he landed, “Cena rolled through it, hit Dominik with an AA, and pinned him to win the title.”

This title win adds the one major championship to Cena’s collection that had eluded him his entire career. It also adds a new, dramatic wrinkle to his “Last Time is Now” retirement tour, which is set to conclude at the Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
