Women’s Champions League predictions

Despite their dominance of the Women’s Super League, European success continues to elude Chelsea.

The Blues have won the WSL title eight times since 2015 but a runners-up effort in the 2020-21 campaign is the closest they have come in the Champions League.

Sonia Bompastor’s side were knocked out of last season’s competition at the semi-final stage by Barcelona, but they should rightly be considered among the favourites this time and Chelsea should have few problems landing a second win of the league phase when they head to Austria to take on St Polten.

A 1-1 opening draw against FC Twente could be regarded as a disappointment, but a 4-0 win over Paris FC got the Blues firmly back on track and a trip to St Polten should hold few fears.

The Austrian hosts have dropped just five points in 11 league matches, but it has been a different story among the continent’s elite as they are bottom of the 18-team standings, having conceded nine goals in their opening two games against Atletico Madrid, who hit them for six, and Lyon.

So they face a big task against the Blues, but it could pay to go low on the number of goals the Londoners are able to muster.

Their 4-0 win over Paris was only the fourth occasion in their last 22 Women’s Champions League matches that Chelsea have scored more than three goals.

That has happened in just two of their last 19 home league games too – against bottom-of-the-table West Ham this term and relegated Crystal Palace last season.

Weir is geared to make her mark

The other three games on Tuesday evening are not quite as one-sided on paper, but Roma, Lyon and Real Madrid should all still come out on top.

One player it is worth backing to score is Madrid’s Scottish star Caroline Weir when they entertain Paris.

Weir has fought her way back from a serious knee injury and is now an integral part of the Las Blancas line-up, scoring four goals in La Liga Femenina this term and a brace in their 6-2 opening league-phase win over Roma.
