Adil Ray, one of the presenters of ITV’s Good Morning Britain, has reportedly been summoned by executives after comments about Sharia law.
Ray’s remarks were made in response to Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York’s mayor.
Mr Ray posted: “Some say Mamdani may implement Sharia Law. He might. The heart of Sharia is social justice, welfare, fairness, charity and cohesion.
“Most Muslim countries operate a hybrid of Sharia and civil law, are slowly reforming and abandoning unethical practices despite the West’s portrayal.”
Reacting to the comments from the BBC Citizen Khan star, an ITV viewer angrily said: “This will be your undoing.”, reports Birmingham Live.
A source told the Sun newspaper: “GMB execs are pretty cross. His comments sent bosses into a tailspin and he was called in.
“It was a nightmare as hours earlier ITV revealed it was in talks to sell its broadcasting arm to Sky in a £1.6billion deal. Obviously, they don’t want anything to derail that.”
Mr Ray later clarified: “To clarify, I am not actually suggesting Mamdani would implement sharia law.
“But many issues he campaigned for are some of the positive values of Sharia that Muslims try to live by. Something many of us would agree on.”

Mamdani, a 34 year old democratic socialist and state assembly member from Queens, secured victory with more than 50% of the vote. Cuomo, 67, finished second with just over 40%, whilst Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received just over 7% of the vote.
Mamdani, speaking to supporters in Brooklyn after a decisive victory over Andrew Cuomo, the former governor, said New York had shown it would be the “light” in a “moment of political darkness”.
“Here we believe in standing up for those we love, whether you are an immigrant, a member of the trans community, one of the many Black women that Donald Trump has fired from a federal job, a single mom still waiting for the cost of groceries to go down, or anyone else with their back against the wall,” Mamdani said.
