Red Wing Native’s Hiatus From ‘Chicago PD’ Begins

If you’re a big fan of procedurals, you probably watch the One Chicago shows on NBC! The intertwined shows follow a hospital, police department and fire station in Chicago across three different shows.
One of the longest-running is Chicago PD, which is currently on its thirteen season. Unfortunately, news broke late last month that one of the stars would be taking a hiatus from the show.
The fun thing about these shows is because Illinois isn’t too far away, sometimes they shout out Minnesota. One time, one of the shows even gave Duluth a shoutout, which made my entire day.
Another Minnesota connection? One of the stars of Chicago PD is from Red Wing, which is about three hours from our neck of the woods. Now, that same star is taking a break from the show – and his last episode just aired.

Patrick John Flueger Takes Hiatus From Famous Television Show
This series has some seriously intense fans so everyone went into a frenzy when it was shared late last last month that he would be taking a break from the show. The good news is, as of now, the hiatus is temporary.

The actor himself has not given a reason for his departure. While there are rumors circulating about what caused him to go on hiatus, nothing has been confirmed by Patrick himself. Deadline reported at the time that the hiatus is for a ‘personal matter’ and the show was working to write his absence into the show.

Patrick John Flueger’s Last Episode (For Now) Airs On NBC
If you watch the show and are curious when the actor’s absence would start to play out on screen, we seemingly have an answer. (The actor plays a cop named Adam Ruzek, by the way.) It seems like it’s already begun.

I am a few episodes behind but I skimmed through the last few to see if and when he makes an appearance. At the time of writing, his last appearance this season was on was episode five, which aired last month.
He was not in episode six, which just aired last week. He was also not featured or mentioned in the trailer for this week’s episode, which is the fall finale. It looks like the best chance for answers will be when the show returns in 2026.

As a longtime fan of these shows and shows that follow this same formula, they usually drag out character absences like this to create drama or suspense for the show. I bet when he comes back to the show, they will say he went undercover but couldn’t tell anyone!
Thankfully, that works on a show like this and the writers did have to use quick thinking to rework scripts. I am excited for him to come back to the show!
