The staff and students of FCJ Secondary School in Bunclody had their eyes glued to the television on Wednesday, November 5 when the U17’s Ireland team went against Panama in their opening group match in Qatar.

The school were extra proud to have student Ryan Butler on the pitch, helping the team earn their first victory.

Just before he left on his trip, teacher Ms Kenny baked him his own personalised Ireland jersey cake for his send-off.

There was great celebration across households in Ireland as the team finished the match with a victories 4-1 result.

“Well if that wasn’t a mighty start to Ireland’s World Cup journey, then we don’t know what would be!” said teacher Justin Kelly.

“We are bursting with pride today when Ryan not only started for his country, but represented them so well. The passion and drive that he has for the game was etched all over his face throughout the game,” he added.

Their first match group also includes Uzbekistan and Paraguay.

Mr Kelly explained that they had much to celebrate with Ryan’s recent accomplishment.

“He is the first person in FCJ to make an Ireland soccer squad and we are hugely proud of him. Along with this, it is the first time Ireland has qualified for the World Cup at this age level,” he said.
