First flurries fall in parts HRM as province urges winter readiness

Parts of Halifax Regional Municipality saw its first flurries of the season Wednesday morning, a sign of things to come as winter approaches.

Allister Aalders, 95.7 NewsRadio weather specialist, said cooler air has moved into the region, causing some sea-effect flurries that were expected to diminish as the morning went on.

Temperatures are expected to hover around 8 C as the day progresses, with cooler weather overnight around 1 or lower, Environment Canada notes.

The province is reminding residents to prepare for snowy and icy conditions over the next few months.

Officials say drivers should have winter tires installed, ensure cold-temperature antifreeze is in their vehicles and keep an emergency kit on hand.

Other winter driving tips include always wearing a seatbelt, slowing down and leaving extra space between vehicles, keeping the gas tank at least half full, clearing snow from your vehicle and planning ahead for possible delays.

The provincial government is also running its annual Be Winter Ready campaign, which features online ads promoting safe driving tips.

More information can be found on the province’s website.

Rain is set to move into the region on Thursday and Friday with temperatures expected to be 6 C and 3 C.

Saturday, the sun should come out for the day before the rain returns, the weather agency predicts.
