Bihar election results: In Bhojpur, NDA gives tough fight in RJD stronghold

The BJP-led NDA is mounting a strong challenge to the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar’s Bhojpur belt, which is considered a stronghold of the RJD. Early trends show that the NDA is ahead in 21 of the 49 seats in the region, while the Mahagathbandhan is leading in 17 seats. In the 2020 elections, the Mahagathbandhan dominated the Bhojpur belt.

The scenario mirrors the overall trends, which show that the NDA is firmly in the driver’s seat in Bihar, even though the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan is close behind.

In fact, exit polls by Axis My India predicted a close contest in the region, which is near the capital Patna. It predicted 27 seats for the NDA and 21 seats for the Mahagathbandhan. Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party is unlikely to open its account here.

The Bhojpur region in central Bihar is a significant part of the state’s political landscape, comprising the Siwan, Sandesh, Barhara, Arrah, Agiaon, Tarari, Jagdishpur, and Shahpur constituencies. This region, which mainly falls on the Gangetic plains, is plagued by the issue of floods almost every year.

Bhojpur, which saw a high turnout of over 57%, witnessed elderly voters and women coming out in large numbers to cast their ballots. Women voters have been a core constituency of Nitish Kumar, and his most recent initiative — transfer of Rs 10,000 each to women beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rozgar Yojana — seems to have paid dividends.
