The 2026 World Cup qualification trail is nearing its climax, and Germany has the opportunity to all but guarantee its place at the tournament when it visits Luxembourg on Friday. Die Mannschaft leads Slovakia on goal difference at the top of UEFA Group A and can potentially open up a gap with only a couple of games to play.
The two teams hold identical records of three wins and one defeat thus far in qualifying, with Slovakia having stunned the Germans with a 2-0 win in Bratislava back in September. Julian Nagelsmann’s side have recovered to take to the top of the pool, but their future at next year’s global tournament isn’t quite sealed just yet.
Luxembourg, on the other hand, is already well aware it will not be featuring at the World Cup after failing to pick up a single point in four qualifiers to date. That means the best the Red Lions can do is hope to act as a speed bump this weekend and potentially aid Slovakia’s cause in the process.
The Germans have won in each of their last seven encounters with Luxembourg and triumphed 4-0 when these teams faced off in Sinsheim last month. However, it’s perhaps a concern for Nagelsmann that his side has looked far less capable on the road, producing just one goal in two away qualifiers thus far.
