Scots JLS fans fume over Newcastle ‘betrayal’ as Geordies furiously boo Scotland

Aston Merrygold was heard scolding the ‘aggressive crowds’ after fans at their Newcastle gig booed Scotland.
Scottish JLS fans have found themselves embroiled in a fiery feud with the boyband’s Geordie supporters after crowds at their Newcastle gig furiously booed the mention of Scotland. The four-man band performed at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Saturday, November 8, as part of their The Club Is Alive: 2025 Hits Tour, just days after their OVO Hydro gig in Glasgow on Thursday, November 6.
In a video uploaded to TikTok by JLS fan @kayleighmarie93, the Newcastle crowds could be heard booing loudly at the mention of JLS’ gig in Scotland. In the clip, Aston Merrygold could be heard saying: “So obviously we’ve just been in Scotland right”, before he was interrupted by loud boos from fans.
The star appeared surprised by the reaction as he said: “It’s very aggressive for a Saturday night, I’m just saying, I’m just letting you know where we were.” He was met with more boos as he said: “I’m just letting you know Newcastle that they were incredible singers.”
Kayleigh, who posted the video to TikTok, captioned the post: “Every time Aston mentioned Scotland, the crowd just started booing #JLS #theclubisalivetour #jlstour.”

The footage sparked fury from Scottish fans as they defended themselves in the comment section.
One wrote: “How embarrassing for Newcastle.” A second took things a bit further as they remarked: “England why don’t you hold an independence referendum if you hate us so much? Would be wonderful.”
A third questioned: “What’s the beef with us like? I used to like Newcastle tae.”
Another asked: “Eh wait what!!! What has Scotland done to get boos from our Newcastle buddies. Scotland and Newcastle are cut from the same cloth…or so I thought. Oh dear.”

Some Scottish fans at the Newcastle gig expressed their feelings of ‘betrayal’ as one penned: “As a Scottish person attending the Newcastle concert I was very offended hahaha.”
A second echoed: “The looks I got for cheering. Represent always”, with a Scotland flag emoji.
A third said: “I was there with my daughter, sister and niece and we were shouting No Scotland No Party.”
Someone else fumed: “I don’t get it? Don’t us Scots go to Newcastle for nights out and vice versa? Feel kind of betrayed by this as a Scot.”
Other Geordie fans in the comments excused this behaviour as one wrote: “This is embarrassing for us Geordies who love Scotland and their people.”

Another person agreed: “As a Geordie that was there, my friends and I recoiled in embarrassment at the booing, not the vibe at all honestly.”
Someone else added: “I was there and was so confused by this. I like Scottish people.”
Scotland and Newcastle are known to have a good relationship with this being highlighted in a Reddit thread posted on r/NewcastleUponTyne.

A Reddit user asked: “Do the people of Newcastle feel more culturally close to Scotland than they do to the south of England?”
In the comments, a handful of Geordies confirmed they feel they have a lot in common with Scots as one user wrote: “Yes Scotland for me I think I just get on with them better and understand the banter a lot better!”
A second said: “Speaking for myself, yes, I don’t relate to the south at all, and feel more aligned with Scotland, though not to the point I think we’re part of Scotland.”
A third penned: “I’m Scottish and live in Newcastle and think the people are very similar. I’m from Glasgow and the cities are also very similar. Industrial cities but Glasgow is just a bigger version.”
