Star Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher fined for hip drop tackle

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig was fined for a hip drop tackle against Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
The play came on a sack when Herbig landed on one of Hebert’s ankles, and he came up gingerly after the play. Officially, he was fined $6.656 for the tackle, his first fine of the season.
The NFL has added an emphasis on eliminating hip drop tackles from the game, even making it a penalty. However, it is a hard judgment call to make in real time, and so it is rarely called, but they are often fined after the game.
That play has created a number of knee and ankle injuries over the years for players, and is outright banned now. It is heavily scrutinized now. Herbert said after the game he was okay.
“I just got rolled up,” Herbert said. “A little bit of pain but I thought we did a good job of talking about it on the sideline. I came off and felt like I was safe and comfortable to go back out there.”
The Steelers have been one of the most heavily fined teams in the NFL this season, much like they have been throughout the last few seasons. Herbig’s fine only adds to a growing total for the Black and Gold in that department.
