Michigan received a Sunday commitment from Saline senior quarterback Tommy Carr, who was committed to Miami (Ohio) but recently was offered by the Wolverines and took it fairly quickly.

Carr is the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who won one national title and five Big Ten titles in Ann Arbor and is in the College Football Hall of Fame. Carr’s father is Jason Carr, who played quarterback at Michigan from 1992 to 1995. Tommy’s brother CJ is the starting quarterback at Notre Dame.

A two-year starter at Saline, Carr is a Mr. Football candidate who led his team to a Division 1 regional final this season, a 42-28 loss to Detroit Cass Tech on Friday night.

“He was a tremendous leader and someone who truly embraced being yourself, not trying to be somebody else and trying to follow in your brother’s footsteps,” Saline head coach Kyle Short said. “That’s a difficult task with the amount of praise CJ gets, but Tommy got to write his own story and even surpass CJ in some ways, winning a district championship and overcoming some of the adversity he had to deal with.”

Carr visited Michigan last week and was offered a scholarship by the staff during that unofficial visit. He becomes the 25th commitment in a Michigan class that is ranked No. 10 nationally by 247Sports.

He is the second quarterback in the class, joining four-star California native Brady Smigiel, who had his senior season cut short with an injury.

Carr is an athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound prospect who can escape pressure and make plays when the original play breaks down. Carr led Saline to a 10-2 record this season, passing for 2,797 yards and 37 touchdowns.

In a 61-34 win over Dexter earlier this season, Carr had 508 passing yards and a school-record eight TD passes. He completed 27-of-31 passes and also rushed for a score.

“He could have had a ton of rushing yards but we chose not to run him based on who we play and what he means to our team, but he’s super athletically gifted,” Short said. “His arm talent has continued to get better. He took a big jump junior to senior year, and as his body continues to develop and he adds weight and muscle, I think the ceiling is not even close to being touched yet.”

247Sports ranks Carr the No. 29 quarterback nationally and the No. 7 senior in the state.
