Motorcycle Deaths Drive Belize’s Road Fatalities Despite Fewer Accidents

When it comes to road collisions and traffic incidents, the figures keep climbing. Just this past weekend, at least five persons were killed due to highway mishaps, adding to the statistics of motor vehicle incidents. Love News accessed a report compiled by the Crime Fusion Centre and found that motorcycle-related accidents are one of the leading causes of road fatalities in Belize. According to official data, in 2024, there were 107 fatal accidents, of which 48 involved motorcycles. Comparatively, in 2025, there have been 66 fatal accidents so far, with 28 involving motorcycles. The Belize District continues to record the highest number of accidents, with 1,509 incidents so far in 2025, followed by the Cayo District with 869. The Eastern Region, which includes Belize City and surrounding areas, remains the most accident-prone region with 1,511 recorded crashes, accounting for nearly half of all national incidents. Despite a decrease in overall traffic accidents, fatal motorcycle crashes continue to concern law enforcement. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Stacy Smith, told the media this afternoon that an intense collaboration is underway on the highways to curb the incidents.
Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Strictly speaking, the data suggests that for this year, as it relates to fatalities, we have seen a reduction. But notwithstanding that there’s a reduction that means our efforts have reduced because any life loss is one life too much. And we have been continuing to do the necessary work to equip ourselves. We have been collaborating with the Transport Department, as you would know, just last week, transport officers completed a three-week training course which was geared towards equipping them with the necessary knowledge to go about and make these arrests. And I’ve been advised that another cohort is commencing another three-week course. As I said, there is a decrease when compared to last year there is still an interest to ensure that the number of road traffic fatality decreases. “
The compiled data indicates that most deadly collisions occur between Thursdays and Sundays, typically between 4:00 p.m. and midnight, a pattern consistent with previous years. The report for this year is from January 1 through to October 28 and shows a total of three thousand three hundred and seventy-three incidents recorded across the country. When compared to the same period last year, this year’s total shows a decrease of 498 incidents. However, authorities caution that although overall crashes are down, the year is not yet complete, and the final two months, traditionally the most festive and high-traffic period, often see an uptick in accidents.
