Channel 4’s Summerwater is the TV equivalent of a wet weekend in Ullapool

In an attempt to make the story fit for TV, the producers have imposed a whodunnit structure. We know from the outset that there has been a terrible fire, but not the identity of the victim or perpetrator. There is also an undertow of horror. Justine discovers a creepy old cabin in the forest, which for some reason prompts visions of a steamy threesome. I don’t remember that bit from the book.

Daniel Rigby stands out in the ensemble cast as Justine’s blokeish husband, Steve, because he acts like a real person rather than a character in a Channel 4 drama.

The final episode takes place at a party and successfully builds tension towards a dramatic finale. But you probably won’t stick it out that long. I imagine quite a few people will give up after the first episode, resolving to avoid this kind of holiday like the plague.

Summerwater is on Channel 4 on Sunday 16 November at 9pm, all episodes on channel4.com
