RCMP say one man has died and two teenagers were sent to hospital after consuming a liquid substance on Sunday.

On Sunday around 12:40 a.m., God’s Lake Narrows RCMP received a report from a First Nation Safety Officer that a 20-year-old man was brought to a Nursing Station for medical care after he consumed multiple drinks of a liquid substance, according to a Monday RCMP media release.

Police said when officers arrived at the nursing station a large crowd of people had gathered, and it was confirmed that the 20-year-old man had died.

Two teenage males, ages 15 and 17, who police said had also consumed the substance, were in medical distress and were flown to Winnipeg for treatment, police said. God’s Lake Narrows is located about 540 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg.

Police say their initial investigation revealed that there were possibly 10 other people who consumed the substance in the northern Manitoba community located more than 1,000 kilometres north of Winnipeg, but all were medically treated and released.

On Monday, Shared Health confirmed that on the morning of Nov. 16, two minors and one young adult were transported from God’s Lake Narrows to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, but said for privacy reasons they would not comment on the nature of the patients’ visits.

Keewatin Tribal Council Grand Chief Walter Wastesicoot said in an email that he spoke to God’s Lake Narrows Chief Gilbert Andrews, who told him the community was in shock but currently not speaking to media.

He added the Keewatin Tribal Council Trauma Team is travelling to the community to assist community members.

Police seized a container of the substance has been seized for analysis, according to the media release, and the provider of the substance has been identified.

The substance has been identified, but police have not confirmed what the liquid was.

God’s Lake Narrows RCMP and Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
