Wales vs North Macedonia preview

North Macedonia and Wales traded injury-time goals in March’s 1-1 draw in Skopje and the Group J rivals remain locked together as they go into their final World Cup qualifier in Cardiff.

Section leaders Belgium are 1-40 to seal top spot with a home win over Liechtenstein, leaving Wales and North Macedonia to scrap for second place.

Both have 13 points from seven games and, while North Macedonia have a significant goal-difference advantage, Wales are odds-on for victory at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The tension of the Group J finale is somewhat diluted by the fact that both teams are guaranteed a playoff spot thanks to their efforts in the 2024-25 Nations League.

Whoever finishes second would gain the advantage of a home semi-final but North Macedonia are capable of frustrating Craig Bellamy’s depleted Wales side.

The visitors have not lost any of their last 14 competitive internationals, including a Euro 2024 qualifying draw with England and 1-1 and 0-0 draws with Belgium in World Cup qualifying.

They certainly rode their luck in last month’s stalemate in Ghent, where Belgium had 25 shots to their opponents’ three, and Wales had the better chances in March’s reverse fixture.

However, playing for a draw may suit North Macedonia and Wales are missing some important players including injured striker Kieffer Moore, defender Ben Davies and regular captain Aaron Ramsey.

Jordan Jones, who scored the only goal of the game away to Liechtenstein on Saturday, and midfield enforcer Ethan Ampadu are suspended so Bellamy’s men look short enough in the match betting.

Wales lost home and away to Belgium, conceding eight goals, and they were 3-0 down inside 20 minutes in last month’s friendly against England.

They also lost 1-0 at home to Canada in a September friendly and their last two qualifying wins, against Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, were both by a 1-0 scoreline.

Back visiting skipper Bardhi to threaten Wales goal

North Macedonia captain Enis Bardhi loves to get forward from midfield and he has had eight shots in his last three qualifiers, scoring against Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan.

The Konyaspor man is also in fine form in this season’s Turkish Super Lig and he had five attempts at goal in last month’s clash with Besiktas.

Sheehan could collect early card in Cardiff

Two of Wales’s starting midfielders on Saturday are suspended for the final Group J fixture so Bolton’s Josh Sheehan is likely to start in the engine-room.

He looks a big price to pick up the first card, having been booked four times in 708 minutes of League One action as well as in June’s home win over bottom side Liechtenstein.

Wales vs North Macedonia Bet Builder

Under 1.5 first-half goals

North Macedonia do not need to force the issue against Wales in Cardiff and March’s reverse fixture was goalless until the 91st minute.

Harry Wilson to have a shot on target

The Wales winger could play a key role on his return from suspension, having had at least one shot on target in eight of his last nine competitive internationals.

Enis Bardhi to have a shot on target

North Macedonia’s midfield maestro scored three goals in ten Super Lig starts for Konyaspor this season and found the net in two of his last three World Cup qualifying appearances.
