The ‘good’ snow: Forecasters call for snow in mountains early and often

In a diagonal line cutting across Wyoming from the northeast corner to the southwest — like your mom cut your grilled cheese sandwiches — forecasters are calling for “good” snow for outdoors enthusiasts.

“Snow lovers won’t have to wait long for great conditions on the slopes this winter,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said. “Some of the best conditions are expected during the first few weeks of the season, with fresh powder, cold blasts and ideal weather to make snow and groom the trails.”

The forecast calls for perfect skiing, snowmobiling and sledding weather early in the season with a bit of a late season melt-off. The map illustrates the best conditions in mountain ranges in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, while those hoping for good snow in Colorado will only see average snow in the northern ranges and poor snow in southern Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.

“The heart of the season could be challenging at many mountains, with midseason thaws and long stretches with little snow,” Pastelok said.

Opening day at Red Lodge Mountain is Nov. 28 and staff closed all uphill travel while they make snow when possible.

‘Please adhere to our Uphill Travel Policy and give way to all mountain operations,” the company asks. “With snowmaking coverage on 28% of trails, we hold the second largest capacity snowmaking system in Montana. This allows us to consistently open in late November and maintain a strong on-piste snowpack throughout the season.”

According to the ski lodge’s webcams updated Wednesday, there is some snow on the ground at the facility. The lodge has 1,635 skiable acres with 2,400-feet of vertical drop on their 70 runs. The longest run covers about 2.5 miles.
