It’s time for Basketball: Spurs vs Atlanta Hawks

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

The conventional wisdom is that the Hawk’s best player is Trae Young, but they’ve been better this year with him out of the lineup than they were when he was healthy. Jalen Johnson is in his fifth year, and he’s having his best year as a pro so far, leading the Hawks in scoring and propelling the team to wins in 5 of their last 6 games. It goes to show that sometimes players that enter the league young take a while to develop into stars, and it’s never a good idea to give up on a player who doesn’t have immediate impact in their rookie or sophomore season. The Hawks also have good depth, with Luke Kennard coming off the bench to provide scoring punch.

The Spurs will still be missing Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper tonight, and Jordan McLaughlin who would normally be counted on to provide some minutes as a backup is also out. With De’Aaron Fox as the only experienced point guard available for tonight, you might end up seeing some time with David Jones Garcia running the offense. DJG rose to the occasion on Tuesday night, scoring a bucket in traffic and holding his own on defense in just under seven minutes of play. The Spurs might play without a point guard for much of the game, and we might see Kelly Olynyk taking care of running the offense at least part of the time that the backups are in the game.

If the Spurs can get a win tonight, they will have secured a winning record on the current five-game homestand, which started with two tough losses to the Golden State Warriors. It’s going to be interesting to see how well the team can perform with so many key performers missing, and a win would put the team in great shape by holding their position in the standings until the roster is at full strength again.

Game Prediction:

David Jones Garcia will have his first NBA double double with 11 points and 10 assists. This momentous achievement will be overshadowed by Harrison Barnes’ 40 point game.
