Mickey Guyton Finds Holiday Magic Again Through Motherhood and New Album Feels Like Christmas

Mickey Guyton, the celebrated country music artist, has found a renewed sense of joy in the holiday season, particularly since becoming a mother. In an exclusive interview, Guyton shared how her 4-year-old son has transformed her perspective on Christmas. “The older you get, it’s just a holiday you get to spend with your family, and traveling sucks, and it’s so hard,” she said. “But now that my son is 4, the holiday season means so much more now.”
Embracing this newfound joy, Guyton has released a holiday album titled Feels Like Christmas, aiming to spread positivity during what she describes as a challenging year for many. “It was something that I really had on my heart at the beginning of this year,” she explained, emphasizing her desire to create an upbeat collection to uplift spirits. The album notably excludes traditional sadder holiday songs, instead featuring feel-good tracks, including the original “Sugar Cookie” and a lively duet with acclaimed artist Michael Bolton. “Christmas is one of those holidays that can be either very cheerful or a reminder of what is lost,” Guyton noted. “And I didn’t want to do that.”
In keeping with the spirit of the holidays, Guyton shared her family’s unique tradition of holding an “international cookout competition,” which adds an exciting twist to their celebrations. “We pick an international dish that we’ve never tried before and we cook it, and then we go around and we taste-test,” she elaborated. Participants take the competition seriously, with beautiful plating and a detailed menu presentation. “My dad is very generous with this prize, and people take this very seriously,” Guyton said, highlighting the fun and camaraderie that permeates their holiday gatherings.
As the holiday season approaches, Guyton also shared her favorite seasonal tracks, which she plays annually. For trimming the tree, she insists on “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee, calling it a requisite earworm. When it comes to songs that embody the true essence of Christmas, she cherishes “The Little Drummer Boy.” “The little drummer boy was a poor boy, and so all he did was give him what he had,” she expressed, emphasizing that the spirit of giving isn’t about materialism but about selflessness.

Her fondest holiday memories are intertwined with the soundtrack of “The Preacher’s Wife,” especially Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me.” Additionally, she appreciates the connection between holiday songs and her favorite movies, citing “The Trouble With Love Is” by Kelly Clarkson from Love Actually as an iconic tune that remains close to her heart.
When it comes to setting the holiday mood, Guyton suggests Mariah Carey’s classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as a perennial favorite, though she also enjoys the sentimentality of “Christmas Time Is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas. “It does make me sad though,” she added, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of some holiday tunes.
As she gears up for the festive season, Guyton remains focused on creating a joyful atmosphere not only through her music but also through cherished family traditions and beloved songs that capture the spirit of togetherness and love.
