Two UAB football players were injured by a teammate on Saturday morning at UAB’s team facility, according to a school spokesperson.
Two people were transported to UAB Hospital, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service told AL.com.
UAB said the suspect is in custody and there is no threat to campus. An investigation is underway.
Everyone involved is in “stable condition” and the team elected to play Saturday’s home game against South Florida, the spokesperson said.
UAB declined to provide details on the suspected assailant.
According to Jefferson County jail records, UAB defensive lineman Daniel Mincey was booked Saturday at 12:40 p.m. and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder.
Mincey spent 2024 at Kentucky and transferred to UAB before the 2025 season.
Saturday’s game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. ET.
“UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students,” the university said in a statement. “Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
UAB is 3-7 this season and fired coach Trent Dilfer last month. Offensive coordinator Alex Mortensen has served as interim coach since the change.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
