Wayne Rooney leaves ex-team-mate Gary Neville stunned after revealing how much he was being paid at Man Utd

WAYNE ROONEY was once paid £17million a year during his peak at Manchester United – a revelation that left his ex-team-mates gobsmacked.
The legendary England striker is United’s all-time record scorer on 253 goals and regarded as one of the best players in Premier League history.

Rooney told The Overlap podcast he was paid over £300,000-per-week after putting pen-to-paper on a five-and-a-half year deal in 2014.
The agreement – signed when Rooney was 28 going on 29 – also included commercial rights and ambassadorial commitments beyond his playing career.
Gary Neville asked: “You might not want to answer this, but you also might want to take it out even if you do answer it, what would your biggest contract have been at United?
“Because I’m your teammate in 2010/11, I’m on £1.75million [per year], I’m captain…”

Rooney, 40, responded: “Biggest? Probably about £17million-a-year.”
Neville had his jaw dropped and with a slight grin, he said: “I think I should have got paid a little bit more!”
Pointing at Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford, Neville added: “That’s amazing, congratulations… Well done, Paul.”
Rooney, whose previous £250,000-a-week deal was about to expire, had looked set to leave Old Trafford in the previous summer after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed he had asked for a transfer.

Former right-back Neville earned a basic salary of £1.75m, rising to £2.25m, a far cry from what his old colleague would go on to bank.
He added: “[Money] was never a focus for me. I never once worried about the money side of it. I just thought that if I can get to the end of my career at 35 or 36 at United then I know I’ll be alright.
“When they offered me seven years on less money, it was better for me than signing for four years on higher money. I always thought in a more cautious way.”
Carragher revealed his biggest deal had been worth around £3m, with much of his earnings coming through performance bonuses after Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League triumph.
Keane, meanwhile, said he earned around £5m at his peak, far exceeding Neville’s because he was a “better player, obviously”.
