San Diego State bounced back from its first Mountain West loss last week with a 17-7 victory over visiting Boise State that improved it to 5-1 in conference play. Jayden Denegal’s eight-yard touchdown run late in the first half spotted the Aztecs a 14-7 lead, and the defense stood firm after the break. Lucky Sutton carried the offensive load with 150 yards on 25 carries while Denegal scored twice on the ground. In heavy rain, San Diego State relied on the run game, finishing with 277 yards while only throwing the ball 10 times for 17 yards.
San Jose State took its second straight loss last week, taking a 55-10 pummeling at Nevada. The Spartans turned the ball over five times and trailed 31-0 at the half. Walker Eget was pulled after going 11-of-23 for 74 yards and three interceptions, while Tama Amisone got San Jose State’s only touchdown with a 12-yard run with 1:23 remaining. Steve Chavez-Soto led the ground game with 47 yards on eight attempts.
The Aztecs reach the conference championship game by winning out, but can still get there with a loss to San Jose State coupled with a victory over New Mexico in the regular-season finale. San Diego State holds a 24-21-2 all-time edge in the series, but the Spartans won the most recent meeting 24-13 at home on Nov. 18, 2023.
