Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert has unveiled a useful calculator to help people determine the cost of their Christmas lights this year. The tool allows users to input the type of decoration, daily usage hours, and number of days before calculating an estimated total cost.
For instance, MSE estimates that LED fairy lights containing between 500 and 1000 bulbs, switched on for eight hours daily over a fortnight, will cost approximately 18p. However, if the lights are traditional incandescent rather than LED, this figure jumps to roughly £1.93 across the 14-day period.
A moving illuminated decoration, such as a nodding reindeer, used for the same duration, carries an estimated cost of “about 35p”. Meanwhile, a large inflatable decoration, such as a Santa Claus figure, is predicted by MSE to incur a 44p charge for eight daily hours over two weeks.
MSE guidance addss: “We’ve calculated this for standard light / decoration sets, so we’ve had to make some assumptions (unless you entered your own wattage) as clearly there can be a whole host of variance on specific sets.
“Yet we hope it illuminates the rough cost of your lights for you.”
