Fabrizio Romano reveals ‘the only way’ Manchester United will keep ‘fantastic’ star next season

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there is just one way for Manchester United to keep one of their most important players next season.
Manchester United are enjoying a strong spell of form, going five games unbeaten with notable victories over Liverpool, Sunderland and Brighton.
The attacking reinforcements brought in over the summer are starting to pay off, with Bryan Mbeumo emerging as the standout signing in the forward line.
However, United’s resurgence is also closely tied to Casemiro’s displays in midfield. The experienced Brazilian has been one of Ruben Amorim’s most influential performers in recent weeks.
His contribution has been especially significant given the club’s failure to secure any midfield recruits in the summer, though it’s worth noting his contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of the season.
Romano reveals ‘the only way’ United will keep ‘fantastic’ star
Before the season started, it seemed nailed that United were planning to let Casemiro leave the club when his contract expires but things have changed in the last couple of months.
Fabrizio Romano has explained how United want to keep the Brazilian at the club beyond the end of the season but ‘the only way’ that happens is if the player agrees to new terms.
The Reds do not want to keep Casemiro on his current deal, where he earns more than £300,000-a-week, and would only be able to keep him if he accepts a lower salary.
“My understanding is that the situation of Casemiro is a really similar situation, in terms of strategy, to Harry Maguire,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“They are two really important players, Casemiro has been able to change his situation at Manchester United… he has always been a legend of the game, a fantastic midfielder, and he’s been able to change his situation to become a starter for Ruben Amorim, a crucial player on and off the pitch.
“The desire from Man United is obviously to continue with Casemiro, but on different conditions. The salary he has right now is a salary that Manchester United don’t want to pay in the future, not because of Casemiro, because they want to change the salary structure.
“So at the moment for Casemiro, the only way to stay would be a different contract on a different salary, otherwise he could be free next summer to go wherever he wants.”
Keeping Casemiro would be a good move
These kind of reports came out when Raphaël Varane’s contract at Old Trafford was expiring a couple of years ago but the Frenchman never agreed to fresh terms.
It is hard to tell whether Casemiro would do so. He would likely be able to get an extraordinary offer from Saudi Arabia next year and game-time would not be guaranteed at United after new midfield signings were made.

But it is extremely useful to have these experienced heads in the building, especially since United’s signings are usually under the age of 25.
Keeping Casemiro would be a good move but United are right to focus on trimming the wage budget and ensuring they stick to a more sensible structure, as that is one of the things that has handicapped the club in recent years.
