Seamus Coleman lasted fewer than 10 minutes on his return to the Everton starting line-up.
The club captain made his first Premier League start of the season as the Blues travelled to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. It was his first league start since the final game at Goodison Park against Southampton in May. Coleman lasted around 20 minutes in that game before being withdrawn.
His involvement was even shorter on Monday night as he was replaced by Jake O’Brien barely 10 minutes into the action. Coleman walked straight down the tunnel and was not present for the chaos that unfolded soon after when teammates Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane were involved in an altercation that led to the midfielder being sent off.

Coleman’s opportunity came after the 37-year-old had played both matches for Republic of Ireland in the international break, helping them to the wins over Portugal and Hungary that ensured qualification to the World Cup play-offs.
It also came with David Moyes seeking a solution to Everton’s ongoing issues at right-back.
