Herrington: With stars out, Grizzlies supporting cast steadies the ship

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.

Has the crisis been averted?

A week and a half ago, the Memphis Grizzlies lost by 36 on the road against a fairly middling Boston team. It was the Grizzlies’ seventh loss in their past eight games, a stretch that was launched with some on-court quiet-quitting and postgame fireworks from star Ja Morant. And it was the first game after which head coach Tuomas Iisalo publicly questioned his team’s effort.

After that, the Grizzlies (6-11) gave much better effort in two tough games (at Cleveland and at San Antonio), carrying small leads into the fourth quarter before finally losing their grasp. Then they won consecutive games for the first time this season: Thursday at home against Sacramento and on the road Saturday in Dallas.
