49ers WR throws punch at Carolina player after win over Panthers

The San Francisco 49ers win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night didn’t end with the final whistle.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a punch at Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig during the postgame handshakes. Their scuffle was quickly broken up and Moehrig didn’t throw a punch back, but it was a fittingly ugly end to an ugly night for the 49ers. They pulled out a win in a rough performance thanks in part to Jennings’s five catches for 41 yards and a touchdown, but his actions after the contest might cost him a game in Week 13.

Here’s a video of the kerfuffle:

It turns out the punch from Jennings wasn’t out of nowhere. On a run by 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey late in the game, Moehrig threw a punch below the belt on Jennings.

Jennings may receive discipline from the NFL for the postgame punch. Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was suspended for one game earlier this season for inciting a postgame brawl with the Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster.

Monday’s fisticuffs fell well short of the mele that took place at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 6, but the NFL may still hand down some punishment with so many eyes on the Monday Night Football game.

The 49ers will have a quick turnaround with a visit to face the Cleveland Browns at 10:00am Pacific Time on Sunday.
