Bargain Hunt expert Izzie Balmer reveals how she transitioned from geography graduate to antiques specialist

Izzie Balmer, a prominent figure on television shows like Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, has taken an unconventional journey to reach her current role as an antiques expert. At 36, Izzie has made a name for herself in the antiques industry, showcasing her expertise as a team leader on popular auction shows. Her rise to prominence began in 2022 when she filled in for Charles Hanson, impressing the BBC enough to secure a permanent position.
Izzie shared insights into her experiences, stating, “I love the adventure of life on the road, visiting new places, meeting new people and sometimes having a few hiccups along the way that we can all laugh about afterwards.” She described the camaraderie among the Bargain Hunt cast, emphasizing the strong bonds they share, even if they do not see each other for long stretches at a time.
Contrary to many of her co-stars, Izzie’s affinity for antiques was not innate. Originally hailing from Derbyshire, she entered the world of antiques somewhat by chance after graduating with a geography degree from Durham University. Despite her academic background, Izzie found herself at a crossroads when it came to her career. With no clear direction, her mother encouraged her to undertake work experience at a local auction house. This opportunity changed the course of her life; within two weeks, Izzie was offered a position, marking the beginning of her journey in the antiques field.
Starting her career at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire, she quickly ascended the ranks over four and a half years, later becoming the head valuer and auctioneer at Wessex Auction Rooms. Her television career ignited when she stepped in for Charles Hanson, and as a result, she caught the attention of BBC producers, leading to her role in Antiques Road Trip and eventual transition to Bargain Hunt. “I couldn’t say yes fast enough and here I am,” she recalled, expressing her excitement about joining the beloved franchise.

Beyond her television commitments, Izzie remains devoted to her first passion: music. She plays the viola in various orchestras around Bristol and performs as part of a string quartet at weddings and events. When she’s not immersed in her professional endeavors, Izzie enjoys social outings, dining, strolling through nature, and attempting her hand at gardening. In rare moments of downtime, she cherishes sitting outside with a coffee and a good book, reflecting her penchant for a balanced lifestyle that intertwines her hobbies with her career.
