Bristol City will make a late decision on whether or not Scott Twine is able to feature against Wrexham, Gerhard Struber has confirmed, with the attacking midfielder suffering with soreness in his quad ahead of the Robins’ midweek trip to North Wales.

City travel to the STōK Racecourse on Wednesday evening as they look to build on their impressive win over Swansea City last time out. Having won promotion from League One last term, Wrexham currently sit 14th in the Championship and find themselves in the middle of a six-match unbeaten run in the league.

The Robins’ win over the Swans was their first in four matches, but may well have come at a cost. Twine – who has started all of the Reds’ 16 Championship games so far this term – was withdrawn after 72 minutes on Saturday lunchtime, with Yu Hirakawa taking his place in attacking midfield.

Although that was a change made for rotation purposes, rather than as a result of injury, Twine has been left with a tightness in his quad. As a result, Struber will decide on Wednesday if the 26-year-old is fit to feature against Wrexham, but the City boss is adamant he won’t take any unnecessary risks.

“I would say until now, we have really good feedback,” the head coach explained when asked if everyone had come through the meeting with Swansea fully fit. “The only player [who] was a little bit with problems in the last few days was Twine.

“Twine feels a little bit, and we have to look tomorrow [at] is he ready or is he not ready? But we have one day more time and then we decide if he will be with us, or not with us.

“He feels a little bit in the quad, but nothing happened,” Struber added to Bristol Live. “It was more a soreness, so a little bit of a tight feeling. But we want to go in zero risky moments with him, and we will see tomorrow what is his feeling and how he is going.

“We have no stress in this direction to let him play with not a good feeling.”

Injuries have proven to be a challenge for the Reds for much of the season so far, but Saturday’s win over Swansea saw a handful of important first-team players return to the matchday squad having overcome their respective issues.

City captain Jason Knight, who had missed each of the Robins’ last eight games with a groin injury, was a second-half substitute, as was fellow Ireland international Mark Sykes. Neto Borges returned to the starting line-up, having missed the draw with Watford prior to the international break, and Cam Pring featured in a squad for the first time this term after undergoing ankle surgery in pre-season.

Naturally, given their importance to the team in last season’s top six securing campaign, there has been an appetite from supporters to see both Pring and Knight thrust back into the first-team fold quickly, particularly the latter given the shortness of options in midfield.

While Knight is “much closer” to being considered for a starting role, Struber plans to take a more cautious approach with Pring. Despite that intent, there is a possibility the versatile defender could play his first minutes of the campaign against Phil Parkinson’s side on Wednesday evening.

“I would say that’s the special word here, to be careful,” the head coach said on Pring. “Absolutely with him, I think he was out for seven months, so he has not the training and game load in his legs that we want [so] that we can think of him to be a starter player.

“Right now, I would say it is the first time that we can think on some minutes, and tomorrow could be the kick-off in this way.

“Jason is much closer,” Struber continued. “On the same time, in exchange with all my specialists here in the club – and external – so that we have, in the end, also with him, a clear plan [of] how high the load can be in weeks like that.

“Also, I think we have to be smart in which direction we go with him tomorrow, and also strategical-wise on Saturday.”
