Terry Bradshaw and Michael Strahan engaged in a heated war of words while discussing a longstanding narrative surrounding the Miami Dolphins last year.

Ahead of the 2024 Thanksgiving Day clash between the Dolphins and Green Bay Packers, Bradshaw — whose rare absence from FOX NFL Sunday earlier this month raised concerns — expressed confidence that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would be able to withstand the near-freezing temperature at field level in Lambeau. “Mike McDaniel has got his quarterback back,” he said on FOX Sports’ pregame show. “Folks, you’re in for a treat tonight because the weather doesn’t bother Tua.”

Bradshaw’s bold assertion was swiftly disproven, however, once a graphic displayed Tagovailoa’s unsightly track record in the cold. Over eight games played in 50 degrees fahrenheit or below, the Alabama product boasted a meagre 1-7 record entering the Thanksgiving contest.

Strahan swiftly pointed out the obvious, stating: “The cold weather obviously bothers the man.” Yet Bradshaw was having none of it, as the 77-year-old grabbed his colleague’s head before shouting: “Think positive, Mike!”

Given the fact that Tagovailoa spent much of his formative years in warm climates like South Florida and Hawaii, critics have questioned if he is able to perform in worse playing conditions.

The star signal-caller, for one, pays little attention to pre-game forecasts. “I think for me, it’s understanding that there could be many things — could be snowing, it could rain, I don’t know,” Tagovailoa told reporters back in December 2022.

“For me, it’s a mindset thing, really. If I’m too focused on, ‘Is it too cold? Can I grab the ball,’ then I would say I’m focused on the wrong things. It’ll be hard to play that way going (up) there and playing against a good team.”

Heading into last year’s matchup versus the Packers, however, Tagovailoa conceded that he was looking forward to disproving the notion that cold weather caused him to struggle.

“I’m excited to kill narratives,” he said. “Let’s go. Bring it on.”

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel expressed a similar sentiment, adding: I’ve already told the team, there’s two things that will be said until we do something about it, [and that is win games against] good teams and [in] cold weather.

“It doesn’t bother me in any way, shape or form. We have some plans on how to attack this week, but I relish that opportunity because, yeah, there’s one way to correct that.”

Unfortunately for Tagovailoa, he was unable to “kill narratives” as the Dolphins fell to the Packers, 30-17. The 27-year-old, to his credit, turned in a strong performance — completing 37-of-46 passes for 365 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

On the heels of the disheartening defeat, McDaniel acknowledged that the only way to prove the naysayers wrong would be to deliver when it mattered most.

“That’s the thing with narratives,” he said. “There’s one way to change them … the naysayers, you prove them right, they’ll be louder. That’s part of the territory. You carry that until you do something about it, and unfortunately, we didn’t tonight.”
