Exciting December and January Social Welfare Updates
Christmas Bonus Announcement
The government has announced a Christmas Bonus in the recent Budget 2026. Approximately 1.5 million long-term social welfare recipients will benefit from this initiative. The bonus, reflecting a full week’s payment, will amount to €370 million.
The exact payment date has yet to be disclosed, but recipients typically receive it in the first week of December, likely starting from December 1.
Payment Schedule Changes
Due to Christmas week banking and postal service closures, certain social welfare payments will be disbursed earlier than scheduled. The new payment dates are expected to be finalized soon, likely occurring in the week preceding Christmas.
Increased Social Welfare Payments
Starting January 1, 2026, all universal social welfare payments—such as the state pension and jobseeker’s allowance—will increase by €10 per week. This adjustment aims to provide additional financial support during the winter months.
Updates to the Working Family Payment
- The income threshold for the Working Family Payment will rise by €60 weekly starting January 2026.
- Recipients will also qualify for the Fuel Allowance beginning in March 2026, retroactive to January 2026.
Increases for Carers and Child Support Payments
The weekly personal rate for Carer’s Allowance will increase by €10 beginning January 2026. In addition, Child Support Payments will see the following adjustments:
- An increase of €8 for children under 12 years (from €50 to €58).
- An increase of €16 for children aged 12 years and over (from €62 to €78).
Moreover, starting July 2026, the weekly income disregard for Carer’s Allowance will increase significantly, allowing more flexibility for families caring for loved ones.
Fuel Allowance Adjustments
The weekly Fuel Allowance will rise by €5, bringing it to €38 per week starting January 2026. The Working Family Payment will serve as a qualifying payment for this allowance from March 2026, with eligibility backdated to January 2026.
Additionally, individuals transitioning from Disability Allowance or Blind Pension to work will maintain their Fuel Allowance for five years.
Domiciliary Care Allowance Increase
Effective January 2026, the Domiciliary Care Allowance will also see an increase of €20 per month, shifting from €360 to €380.
These updates represent a significant enhancement in the financial support system for families and individuals in need, particularly during the holiday season and the subsequent winter months.
