Dispatch actor Aaron Paul won’t go back to Prime Video’s Invincible because it was too much for him

Aaron Paul got his big break in Breaking Bad, but he’s had a bit of a renaissance in the superhero genre. He’s the voice of Robert Robertson III, aka Mecha-Man, in AdHoc Studio and Critical Role’s hit Dispatch game, but before that, he was the voice of Powerplex in Prime Video’s Invincible series. While we’re still hopeful we’ll get to see more of Mecha-Man in Dispatch season two, don’t expect to see Aaron Paul back in Invincible, simply because the character took him to places he didn’t want to go.

“Powerplex is not just messing around,” Aaron Paul explained during an interview. “He’s going through things. Turmoil. I put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest. I didn’t want to do it anymore… The thing is, everyone involved in that is amazing. What it did to me, I didn’t like. I couldn’t continue.”

Powerplex’s descent into madness and vengeance was one of the major plot points of Invincible season three, and the character is expected to return in some capacity in season five. However, it appears that he will be recast before he shows up in the future, as Aaron Paul has ruled out returning to the role. Which is fair; playing villains isn’t for everyone, and it can take you to some weird, dark places if you’re not careful. At least Paul still has the more optimistic, friendly world of Dispatch to return to when he needs his superhero fix.

Invincible is streaming on Prime Video now.
