Dacre Montgomery Opens Up About His Five-Year Hiatus from Hollywood After “Stranger Things”

Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, and Winona Ryder are among the beloved cast members returning for the fifth and final season of the hit series “Stranger Things.” Over the years, the fantasy-drama has faced a revolving door of characters, often casualties of terrifying entities like the Demogorgon or the Mind Flayer. However, for some actors who gained fame through the show, their paths have diverged dramatically.

Dacre Montgomery, known for his role as the charming lifeguard Billy Hargrove, has notably stepped back from the spotlight since his last appearance in 2017. After his stint on “Stranger Things” which aired its second and third seasons, Montgomery has focused on a more understated lifestyle, taking a break from Hollywood’s hectic pace. His return to acting is marked by his participation in the upcoming ghost story “Went Up The Hill,” which signifies a shift in both his personal and professional life.

At 30, Montgomery reflects on his decision to withdraw from the entertainment industry over the past five years. In an interview with The Australian, he expressed concern about what he perceives as the diminishing mystique surrounding traditional Hollywood stars, a change he attributes to the rise of social media. “Social media has done away with that. That’s a large part of why I dropped off the map for the last five years,” he shared.

Despite his departure from the series that launched his career, Montgomery clarified that he won’t be returning for “Stranger Things” season five, which is set to conclude in December. He emphasized a desire for introspection and a command over his career choices. “I’m not trying to compete with anyone else; I’m living my truth and hopefully being able to pay the rent while I’m doing it,” he stated, underscoring his dedication to crafting a balanced life.

Montgomery also conveyed that the emotional investment he makes in his roles contributed to his decision to step back. “I’ve given a piece of myself to every role I’ve played, and that’s largely why I’ve taken time off,” he noted. As he explores new opportunities, fans of “Stranger Things” hope to see him rejuvenated and perhaps in roles where he isn’t at the mercy of fantastical creatures.

In the meantime, viewers are bracing for significant developments in the forthcoming season, and along with it, Montgomery’s journey may inspire many who aspire to carve their paths outside the industry’s relentless demands.
