‘Hey guys, miss me?’: Aussie cult hero stitches up superstar sister in all-time speech

Australian superstar Minjee Lee was once again recognised as the nation’s leading golfer after another outstanding year, but it was her cheeky little brother Min Woo Lee, who stole the show at the PGA Awards on Tuesday night in Brisbane.

With the LPGA Tour Championship wrapping up in Florida on Monday morning Australian time, the older Lee sibling was unable to make it back to Australia in time to receive her fourth Greg Norman medal.

The 29-year-old became just the fourth Australian to win three or major titles – alongside Karrie Webb, Peter Thomson and Jan Stephenson – when she triumphed at the Women’s PGA Championship in Texas in June, and she also won the LPGA’s Annika Award for the best player across the five women’s majors for the year.

Those feats ensured that the world No.4 pipped fellow major winner Grace Kim, who won the Evian Championship in France in July, for the top gong.

In Minjee’s absence, PGA Tour player Min Woo, who was in town for the awards ceremony ahead of the Australian PGA Championship, which got underway at Royal Queensland on Thursday, stepped up to the podium to accept the medal on his sister’s behalf, and delivered a roughly one minute speech that had the crowd in stitches.

“Wow, the Greg Norman Medal again. Fourth time,” he began.

“At this point I should probably just ask them to engrave my name permanently on it so no one else gets their hopes up.

“Honestly, I’m starting to feel bad for everyone who had a great season, only to remember I exist. Must be tough.

“You grind all year, you work hard. You think this could be my time, and then I roll in like ‘hey guys, miss me?’

“I would like to thank the selection panel for continuing to make excellent choices. Your taste is impeccable. Truly elite.

“To my fellow Aussie golfers, keep pushing, keep improving because one day, maybe not soon, maybe one day, you might finish close to me.

“And, of course, shoutout to my team, to my family, and everyone who supports me.

“You keep me grounded, which is honestly impressive considering how high above the rest of the field I apparently keep finishing.

“Anyway, I have the best brother ever. Cheers.”

The stitch-up of a speech would have surely gone down well with the typically humble, Minjee.

She did provide some of her own words from afar on winning the award that she also claimed in 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Unlike her brother’s speech, Minjee was quick to deflect away from herself and to the success of the other Australians on the LPGA.

“It has been an extremely satisfying year personally and for the fantastic team around me, and I am thrilled to receive the Greg Norman Medal,” she said.

“Winning another major was obviously a highlight this year, but watching Grace win her first at Evian was certainly another moment to remember.

“I have no doubt she will be nominated for plenty more awards like this one for years to come.

“Playing with Grace, as well as Hannah (Green) and Steph (Kyriacou), and winning the International Crown representing Australia was another high point of a great year, and shows the strength of Australian women on the world stage.

“I want to thank everyone in my team for the support and guidance they have given me these past 12 months, all the Aussie fans who follow us each and every week, and the PGA of Australia for this prestigious honour.”
