‘Heartbreaking’ film with an iconic soundtrack on BBC tonight

The theme of genuine, enduring friendship takes centre stage in a beloved 1980s tearjerker, featuring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, which airs on BBC this evening (Thursday).

Beaches charts the journey of two central characters whose paths first cross during childhood. Though their temperaments and life trajectories differ markedly, an unbreakable bond continually reunites them throughout their lives.

The film produced a memorable musical accompaniment, earning widespread recognition and featuring performances by Midler. Devotees describe it as “beautiful”, insisting it will “live in your heart forever”.

The narrative introduces us to Cecilia Carol ‘CC’ Bloom, a performing artist from New York, and her solicitor companion, Hillary Whitney, at a pivotal moment in their friendship. Through flashbacks, the film sentimentally explores their decades-long connection, highlighting its various challenges and triumphs.

Their initial meeting in 1958, when both were just 11 years old, is depicted. The encounter takes place beneath a New Jersey pier, where CC, portrayed by Mayim Bialik as a youngster, is evading her domineering mother, while Hilary has wandered astray.

Correspondence between them develops into cohabitation. Their bond faces numerous trials, encompassing romantic entanglements and ethical dilemmas, whilst their professional paths diverge.

The arrival of a child and a life-threatening diagnosis force them to confront themselves honestly and determine their way forward. Based on Rainer Dart’s novel, Beaches arrived in cinemas in 1988 to mixed reviews from critics.

While reviewers found it somewhat clichéd, they commended Bialik’s acting and Midler’s singing. The iconic theme song, Wind Beneath My Wings, secured two Grammy Awards, and the picture received an Academy Award nomination.

However, despite the lukewarm critical reception, it proved tremendously successful commercially, grossing $57million across the US and Canada and retaining a dedicated following today. Supporters have expressed their views on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 42% approval rating.

One enthusiast awarding five stars enthused: “One of my favourite movies! ! Always makes me cry. If you are a woman and you haven’t seen this, then you are seriously missing out!”

Another completely concurred it was an essential classic: “A true crowd-pleasing, tear-jerking, classic story of the deep love of true friendship, expertly performed by all involved and one of the best soundtracks of all time. Beaches will live in your heart and mind forever.”

A third viewer simply declared: “One of the most beautiful films you’ll ever see.”

While another admirer highlighted the leading performances: “Phenomenal movie, outstanding acting from both Midler and Hershey. An absolute must-see if you like films that are guaranteed to make you cry.”

Another fan celebrated Midler’s singing: “One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Bette’s voice is practically the sound of angels. This movie will make you laugh, cry, laugh a whole lot more, and break your heart in two at the end. A must see!”

Beaches airs on BBC4 at 9pm tonight (Thursday, November 27).
