WHAT A GOAL!

The Matildas make it three!
The Matildas make the most of some more poor Kiwi defending.
Ellie Carpenter is on hand to rifle in a scuffed clearance and the right back has a well deserved goal.

68′ Better from New Zealand in the second half
The Football Ferns haven’t found the back of the net, but they have been much improved in this second half.
Their latest foray forward results in a corner, which is whipped in and bobbles up.
A Kiwi head makes contact but the ball bobbles wide.

64′ Changes for the Matildas
Three changes for the Matildas!
Two forwards, in veteran Michelle Heyman and youngster Holly McNamara replace fellow attackers Hayley Raso and Amy Sayer, while Kaitlyn Torpey comes on for Courtney Nevin.
No sign of Sam Kerr on the touchline.

63′ Matildas fashion another chance
The Matildas are once again building quickly through the middle before working the ball out wide – this time to Ellie Carpenter on the edge of the area.
The right back floats in a probing cross that is met by the head of Caitlin Foord.
The header is on target – but it’s loopy and an easy take for Anna Leat in the Kiwi goal.

58′ Great save from Arnold!
The Football Ferns have a rare raid into enemy territory courtesy of the consistently energetic Indiah-Paige Riley.
The ball pops up and falls kindly to Kelli Brown – who makes good connection with her volley from the edge of the area.
Mackenzie Arnold – who hasn’t had a whole lot to do tonight – is down sharply and saving to her right.

52′ What a save from Anna Leat!
The Matildas look destined to go 3-0 up as Caitlin Foord volleys a lofted Emily van Egmond pass from point blank range.
It’s a bit of a shin from Foord – but she gets a very good piece of it.
Anna Leat stands firm and makes a very good save with her feet.

51′ Tenacious Foord wreaking havoc
Caitlin Foord is continuing to be a nuisance on the left.
This time, a pretty simple triangle of passes finds her in space out wide.
She thunders a cross in but it’s overhit.
Emily van Egmond does well to recycle the ball and Ellie Carpenter whips in another cross that Foord does her best — but fails — to get on the end of.

46′ Second half underway
New Zealand gets the second half underway, but is only able to manage a couple passes before Australia wins the ball back.
Maya Hahn, who’s having a difficult night in Gosford, gets her pocket picked and the Matildas are quick to fashion a chance.
Caitlin Foord whips in a bullet cross from the left and Hayley Raso just stands still as the ball cannons off her forehead towards the goal and into the arms of NZ GK Anna Leat.
No half-time changes for either side.

Some promising half-time reading for Matildas fans
That was a really promising half of football from Australia, and the stats certainly back that up:
- Shots: Aus – 10 NZ – 5
- Shots on target: 5 – 0
- Possession: 65% – 35%
- Touches in opposition box: 14 – 7
With only three halves of international football left to play until next year’s Asian Cup, it’s safe to say the 11 Matildas who started tonight have proved their worth to Joe Montemurro.
You’d imagine the boss might shuffle the pack considerably in this second half, which is only moments away.
Who would you like to see get some game time?

The curtain falls on the Matildas’ best 45 minutes of the Joe Montemurro era.
The Matildas were slick, incisive and effective in that first half, with Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso probing in attack, and Katrina Gorry and Kyra Cooney-Cross inventive in midfield.
Amy Sayer opened the scoring courtesy of a fine side-footed effort before Raso doubled the advantage with a lovely, curling strike not long after.
The Football Ferns, while conjuring the odd moment of quality in attack, have been poor in defence.
The Kiwis were their own worst enemies at times in that first half, making a meal of things for Raso’s goal and tempting fate on a couple of occasions after.

45′ Raso has another chance!
And again New Zealand has made a meal of things on the edge of its penalty area!
GK Anna Leat is way off her line as Hayley Raso gathers the ball and tries to make room for a shot.
She does, but the ball is deflected by a black shirt and the Football Ferns survive.
We’re into two minutes of stoppage time.

44′ New Zealand goes close!
Indiah-Page Riley, probably New Zealand’s best player in this first half, has a clear run at the Australian defence.
The Matildas are backing off as the Crystal Palace star approaches the penalty area.
She lines one up and lets fly — it’s a good effort!
But it’s just a little too high.

39′ More good play from Australia
Kyra Conney-Cross is breaking through the midfield once again and working the ball out towards the left.
It’s lovely stuff from the Matildas as they work things diagonally towards the right.
Ellie Carpenter almost slips one through on the edge of the penalty area but New Zealand just about gets the ball away.
On the very next play, Hayley Raso whips in a tantalising cross from the right, but the ball evades the rising forehead of Caitlin Foord.

30′ Matildas looking very, very sleek
Wow, Australia is all over New Zealand right now.
This is surely the Matildas’ best half hour of the Joe Montemurro era.
Caitlin Foord is the latest to go close — she swivels and works a shot across Anna Leat in the New Zealand goal.
The Kiwi GK makes a relatively comfortable save.

27′ Australia goes close again!
Amy Sayer almost has a second!
She strikes the foot of the post from the edge of the penalty area.
The ball rebounds to Ellie Carpenter, who shoots with her first touch.
But the right-back never really got hold of that one and it balloons well over the bar.

Raso finishes a beauty!
Hayley Raso, that is a wonderful finish!
But it’s a soft goal to concede from a Kiwi perspective.
Maya Hahn plays a backwards pass into no-man’s-land, and Hayley Raso is alive enough to jive onto it.
Anna Leat is way out of position and Raso, a good 30 metres from goal, works the ball onto her weaker left foot and expertly bends the ball into the back of the net.
It kisses the post on its way in.

18′ Matildas stand strong at the back
New Zealand has responded well to that opening Sayer strike and has a corner on the right-hand side.
Michaela Foster’s inswinger is worked away by an Australian head and the Matildas rebuild from the back.

Sayer opens the scoring for Australia!

A hopeful long ball is only half dealt with by the Football Ferns on the edge of their area.
The clearing header is picked up by Katrina Gorry, who has the time to roll in a lovely ball to Amy Sayer on her left.
Sayer is cool and composed as she side-foots the ball into the net.
