Ipswich moved into fifth place in the Championship after Tuesday’s 2-0 win at Hull and they have the chance to climb into the top two if they beat third-bottom Oxford at the Kassam Stadium on Friday. A draw or a home win, however, would see Oxford move out of the relegation zone.

Oxford vs Ipswich preview
Fifth-placed Ipswich have one of the deepest squads in the Championship, but Jaden Philogene has been their standout player and he could play a match-winning role against struggling Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.
Having the flexibility to freshen up the side is crucial in a marathon 46-game campaign and Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is certainly taking full advantage of his depth of resources.
McKenna made six changes, including his entire front four, for Tuesday’s 2-0 victory at Hull and one of the braver calls was to ask Philogene, his six-goal top scorer, to drop to the bench.
Philogene was given the role of an impact substitute and played it to perfection by delivering the assist for Marcelino Nunez’s deadlock-breaking 69th-minute goal.
The 23-year-old has shown himself to be a team player and, after having his midweek action restricted, he should be ready to deliver a big performance from the start against Oxford.

Philogene has spent most of his early career playing Championship football. He had an especially productive season with Hull in the 2023-24 campaign, scoring 12 goals in 32 second-tier games, but seems to be playing at an even more elevated level for Ipswich and looks like being a key man in getting the club back to the Premier League.
Backing Philogene to score against Oxford looks a solid strategy and is probably better value than simply siding with the away win at odds-on.
Ipswich are clearly improving, but they have won only three of seven away league games and may need to show patience against a well-organised Oxford side, who have shown the ability to dig in against wealthier clubs with bigger budgets.
Gary Rowett’s outfit are in the bottom three, but they drew 1-1 at home to highflying Middlesbrough last Saturday and achieved an identical outcome from Tuesday’s trip to fellow strugglers Norwich with Filip Krastev’s 95th-minute goal earning a precious share of the spoils.
Staying in the second tier is an ongoing challenge for a club of Oxford’s size. However, they have lost only one of their 17 Championship matches by more than one goal and it might take a moment of brilliance from one of the division’s outstanding players to condemn them to a ninth loss of the campaign.
Energetic Egeli can make his presence felt
Ipswich ask a lot from their offensive players with regard to their off-the-ball work. Norwegian attacker Sindre Egeli has committed 13 fouls in just 600 minutes of Championship football and he looks overpriced to be penalised more than once at the Kassam Stadium.
Suffolk side can show defensive strength
Ipswich have kept back-to-back clean sheets since the international break and their defensive diligence can lay the foundation for a second victory in four days. The Tractor Boys are finding greater consistency in their performances and they can see off Oxford in a fairly comfortable fashion.

Ipswich to win
Ipswich are growing into the season and should pick up an eighth league win of the campaign
Under 3.5 goals
Oxford have kept things fairly tight in recent 1-1 draws with Middlesbrough and Norwich and they can avoid a heavy defeat.
Will Vaulks to be carded
Will Vaulks gets through a lot of work in the Oxford midfield but he can be careless with his tackling and looks overpriced to collect his fourth card of the campaign.
