What you need to know about snowfall in the UK and Wales over December

  • Two storms are predicted to bring heavy rain and as much as 10cm (four inches) of snow for some parts of the country
  • At midday on Friday December 4, all of England and Wales will be battered by rain, according to the advanced modelling weather forecast. Snow will hit northern and central Scotland and move into England, Wales and Northern Ireland the following day
  • On Saturday December 5, light snow could fall in Northern Ireland at around midday, with much heavier snow hitting Ireland. In England the snow will first fall around the Yorkshire Dales and Pennines before spreading throughout the day, with particularly frosty snow in Wales, data suggests
  • The Met Office warns the forecast from November 28 to December 8 includes “showers or longer spells of rain for much of the UK” and “snow will probably be confined to high ground in the north”
  • BBC Weather’s forecast for December 1-7 says Atlantic frontal systems will bring rain mostly to northern and western regions
