Watch: Yuki Tsunoda seen going up to Fernando Alonso and apologising to him after impeding him during F1 Qatar GP sprint shootout

Yuki Tsunoda had seemingly impeded Fernando Alonso during SQ2 at the Lusail International Circuit, along with some other cars, during the session when the Spaniard was on a flyer. So, after the sprint qualifying session was over, Tsunoda ventured over to the two-time champion and apologized for his actions in the session.

Alonso had been on a stellar pace during the Qatar GP weekend. He finished the sole practice session inside the top three and looked set for a top result in the sprint qualifying session.

However, it all nearly unravelled during SQ2, when he encountered multiple slow cars on a fast lap, including Tsunoda. Alonso had then made some angry gestures from his car towards the Red Bull driver.

Knowing that he had held up the Aston Martin driver, Tsunoda waited outside his car after the sprint qualifying had concluded and went over to apologize to Alonso for the previous altercation, which was captured by the onboard camera of the Spaniard’s Aston Martin:

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has been the lead points scorer at Aston Martin, contrary to Yuki Tsunoda, who has brought only 25 points for Red Bull.

Fernando Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023 and is at least contracted to the squad till 2026. While the team is currently in a dogfight among the midfield teams, a lot seems to be on the horizon for the squad in the near future.

Reflecting on the team’s current targets and what is on the table for them in the foreseeable future, the two-time champion told media, including Sportskeeda:

“For the Constructors’ Championship, we are all in five, seven points, and we have three opportunities to score points, two here in Qatar, one in Abu Dhabi, and we want to outscore the competitors, so yeah, excited, next year is going to be interesting.”

“Also for the driving point of view, there are changes in the driving style, in the way those cars will be driven and we have very limited tests, as always, only in Barcelona potentially one day, one day and a half for each driver, and in Qatar two days for each driver, so with the amount of changes that we have next year, definitely that’s not enough time for a driver to adapt, so we need to prepare the winter in the best way possible in the simulator, mentally, physically, very short winter time for us in terms of switching off from this year and switching on to next year, so yeah, exciting times for sure.”

Alonso has scored 40 points in the 2025 season so far, and if he finishes the sprint race in the same place as where he starts, five more points would be added to this tally.
