Everton vs Newcastle preview
Everton’s 1-0 win at Manchester United on Monday night was their best moment of the season and they may not be done yet.
Seven rounds of Premier League fixtures between now and New Year’s Day means there is little time for any side to revel or dwell on results. But the first 11 months of 2025 have been a period of considerable progress for the Toffees, who have gone from battling relegation to the prospect of a much brighter future.
Many managers have gone back to an old club and regretted the decision, but David Moyes and Everton seem a match made in heaven and their reunion is going from strength to strength.
When Moyes returned to Merseyside in January he inherited a team one point above the drop zone with three wins and 17 points from 19 league matches.
Nineteen games and 31 points later he had guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish and was soon plotting further improvement with a bold approach to summer recruitment.
Everton have had their ups and downs in the first 12 games of this season, but they have joined a cluster of clubs who seem far more likely to challenge for European qualification than be dragged into a relegation scrap.
And their rising confidence was evident in Monday’s triumph at Old Trafford, where they started on the front foot but then displayed all their grit after a spat between Michael Keane and Idrissa Gueye resulted in the Senegalese midfielder’s 13th-minute dismissal.
While Everton are a club on the up, Newcastle seem a little unsure of themselves.
The Magpies are finding it tough to put any sort of run together and their inability to perform on their travels is becoming a regular headache for Eddie Howe.
Newcastle are one of three Premier League teams yet to win away from home and their lack of resilience on the road was demonstrated again on Tuesday, when they lost 2-1 to Marseille despite establishing a 1-0 half-time advantage.
Howe’s side are still handily placed in that competition with nine points on the board, but their 15-point league tally is way below expectations for a club who want to consistently challenge at Europe’s top table.
They play nine games between now and the end of December, so there is chance for them to gain some momentum, but they head to Merseyside more in hope than expectation.
Confident Kiernan could hit the target
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was a regular scorer in his last season at Leicester, netting 12 goals in 44 Championship games, and he scored a stunning winner against Manchester United on Monday.
Both of this Premier League goals this season have been on the road but Newcastle will need to be on their guard to stop him opening his home account for the Toffees.
Toffees can win a tight game
Everton were delighted to grind out a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Monday and they could achieve an identical result against Newcastle in a game of fine margins.
Newcastle have scored just 13 Premier League goals and only three of those have come on their travels.
Everton vs Newcastle Bet Builder
Iliman Ndiaye anytime goalscorer
The lively Senegalese forward is Everton’s top scorer in the league with four goals and he may add to his tally.
Bruno Guimaraes to be shown a card
The Brazilian has collected only three Premier League cautions this term but only four players have commited more fouls than his 23.
Under 2.5 goals
The majority of Everton’s matches have been tight and the low-scoring trend is likely to continue.
