Springboks break record set by rivals England

South Africa have surpassed the record set by England for the most points scored against Wales at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

The record was set in the final match of the 2025 Guinness Six Nations, as Steve Borthwick’s side swept their rivals aside 68-14, which was also Wales’ greatest losing margin at home.

Up against a depleted Wales side in the 2025 Quilter Nations Series, Rassie Erasmus’ side levelled England’s points record on 70 minutes as fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converted a Ruan Nortje try.

It was only a matter of minutes later before the world champions were breaking England’s record, as another lock, this time Eben Etzebeth, crossed the line on 75 minutes to extend the lead to 73-0.

Wales had to overhaul over half their squad for the match, as the contest fell outside the Test window. The Springboks were also affected by the loss of player, though they were still able to field a remarkably strong side. Erasmus was still wary of the threat Wales pose when speaking ahead of the match.

“Both teams were in a similar situation with regards to the availability of players, but they have a balanced squad with a few seasoned players and several younger guys who will be desperate to make a statement,” Erasmus said.

“So, we are expecting them to come out firing and to throw everything at us. This is also the last match of the year for both teams, so there’s no doubt they’ll give everything to finish their season on a high note and try to improve their world ranking with the RWC draw coming up next week.”
