Satellite internet company Starlink confirmed that it has not officially announced its subscription fees for users in India and that the company is not taking orders in the country yet.
Lauren Dreyer, VP of Starlink’s business operations, said on X on December 8 that the pricing shown on the Starlink official website for residential consumers in India was due to a “config glitch that had briefly made dummy test data visible.”
She added that the numbers weren’t accurate and that the glitch has since been fixed.
“We’re eager to connect the people of India with Starlink’s high-speed internet, and our teams are focused on obtaining final government approvals to turn service (and the website) on,” she tweeted.
Starlink had previously shared the subscription fee for residential satellite internet service in India as ₹8,600 per month including unlimited data, a 30-day trial, and a weather resilient service that guarantees “higher than 99.9% uptime.”
Earlier in July this year, India’s space regulator granted Starlink the license to launch commercial operations. The Elon Musk-led firm had been waiting since 2022 for complete permissions.
The firm will now be competing with Jio-SES and Eutelsat’s OneWeb here.
The government still hasn’t announced whether the satellite spectrum will be allocated to these companies or if there will be an auction.
Once it has secured spectrum, Starlink has to set up ground infrastructure and conduct security tests and trials. The company reportedly started running technical demos and security tests in October.
