Cost-effective childcare aimed for all Staffordshire primary schools by September 2026

County council officials in Staffordshire have set an ambitious goal to ensure that every primary school in the region offers “cost-effective childcare” by September 2026. This initiative follows additional funding from the Department for Education, designed to assist thousands of parents in accessing wraparound care that enables them to maintain employment.
Since its inception in 2024, this initiative has allocated £1.96 million to create 2,000 additional term-time childcare places across more than 100 providers, including schools, sports organizations, and various childcare entities.
Cllr Alex Hunt, cabinet support member for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Staffordshire County Council, emphasized the significance of this program in enhancing both the quantity and quality of before and after-school childcare throughout the county. “This is an incredibly important programme that has helped increase the quantity and quality of before and after school childcare right across the county,” Hunt stated.
He further underscored the council’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Staffordshire enjoys a strong foundation in life, while also providing parents with the flexibility to pursue their careers. “Making sure that every child in Staffordshire has the best possible start in life and that parents have the choice to pursue a career remains our priority,” he added.

The proactive approach aims not just to improve childcare availability but also to enhance the overall support for families in the region. With the goal set for 2026, the council is optimistic about expanding these essential services to meet the growing needs of the community.
