South Africa’s Dewald Brevis took a blinding catch to send back Indian number four batter Ruturaj Gaikwad in the ongoing first ODI at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi.

It happened on the third ball of the 27th over. Ottneil Baartman bowled a straightforward good-length ball outside off-stump, and Gaikwad went for a powerful slash. He got the timing right and the placement almost perfectly to the right of Brevis at backward point.

However, Brevis showed stunning reflexes, all but flying in the air, and grabbed it with one hand. The crunch of the shot, followed by the collective shock in the crowd, told the story.

Watch the wicket here:

On air, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn and former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri felt that with the catch, Brevis would have made one of his idols, AB de Villiers, who was an excellent close-in fielder, proud.

Chennai Super Kings react

Gaikwad was picked for this ODI as a replacement for India’s first-choice number four, Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a serious spleen injury.

He came to bat at 161/2 when India lost Rohit Sharma and looked to start the knock carefully, playing under his eyes. This was his first truly aggressive shot and it proved costly.

It was bittersweet for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans, who saw their captain’s return to India’s ODI set-up end because of a catch from Brevis, who signed for them last year.

India lose Washington Sundar soon after Gaikwad

India lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply at the start of the innings, but Rohit and Virat Kohli strung a vintage partnership of 136 runs off only 109 balls. Rohit’s wicket slowed things down, and after Gaikwad got out, the new number five in Washington Sundar couldn’t get going either.

He eventually got out for 13 (19), lobbing a drive straight to mid on against Baartman. India were at 200/4 in 30.3 overs.
