What Happened to Garrett Wilson? A Look at Why the Jets Star Isn’t Playing in Week 12

The New York Jets won their second game of the season in Week 10, earning a close victory against the Cleveland Browns. However, they failed to build on it and lost in Week 11 against the New England Patriots, in a game they played without Garrett Wilson.

The wide receiver has already several games with an injury, and is not having his best season due to the inconsistency of both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. But he’s still the most talented weapon for the Jets’ passing game and will be sorely missed.

Garrett Wilson Injury Update

He suffered a right knee injury in Week 6 and missed two games as a result. He re-injured his right knee against the Browns and left the game early, with three targets and no catches.

The right knee sprain could lead him to miss three to four weeks. This is the first time in his career that injuries have played a part. Wilson, a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, did not miss a game in his first three years with the Jets, putting together three straight seasons with at least 1,000 yards.

Against the Browns, the passing offense didn’t work. Despite the 27-20 win, Jets quarterback Fields completed just six passes during the entire game. He finished 6/11 with 54 yards, a touchdown, and an interception; however, the team scored two touchdowns in kick returns.

Even in a difficult season, Wilson is an important player for a passing game that’s struggling. According to PFSN’s WR Impact metric, he has an impact score of 72.4. He’s ranked No. 54, but is still by far their best option at the position.

The quarterback situation does not help the Jets. However, the rest of the wide receiver group is uninspiring as well. Their second-best receiver is Tyler Johnson, who has just 187 yards after nine games. The addition of Adonai Mitchell, resulting from the Sauce Gardner trade, could help, but overall, their passing offense has been nothing short of a disaster.

As one of the few young assets remaining for the upcoming rebuilding, there’s no point in risking him if he’s not 100% to play. The 2-8 record reflects the team’s performance in the 2025 season, as well as the trades completed at the deadline.

Getting ready for the 2026 season is the real goal, and there’s no point in looking for short-term gains.

New York Jets’ Insights for Week 12

Team: New York is one loss away from having a losing record in ten straight seasons.

QB: Tyrod Taylor has qualified for a QBi score three times this season. He has two C+ grades and one D+ grade.

Offense: The Jets’ 139.9 pass yards per game is the lowest in the NFL. The next lowest is the Browns at 159.3 pass yards per game.

Defense: New York has created one turnover this season with no interceptions. No team has gone a whole season without intercepting a pass in the Super Bowl era. The lowest since 1966 is the 2018 49ers, which had two interceptions.

Fantasy: Breece Hall set a new bar for running backs in terms of rushing yards gained against the Patriots in a game this season (58), but the limitations of this offense continue to limit his upside. We are nearing Thanksgiving, and Hall has been held without a rushing touchdown in all but one contest.
