Tulsa prepares roads for winter weather: What drivers should know

TULSA, Okla. –

City of Tulsa crews have been out since midnight treating bridges, overpasses and major roads ahead of expected light winter weather on Wednesday. Officials say they will continue working through the day as temperatures hover near freezing.

Here is how the city is preparing and what drivers need to know.

How crews began preparing overnight

City officials say workers started applying saltwater brine to elevated surfaces in the early morning hours. Crews focused first on areas most likely to freeze, including overpasses and high traffic routes.

More than 200 workers are on standby, supported by dozens of trucks and plows positioned across the city.

Priority roads and high-risk areas

The city says the Gilcrease and Tisdale Expressways are among the top priorities for treatment. Main arterials are also receiving attention before crews move into neighborhoods.

Residential streets near hospitals, schools and steep hills may be treated later in the day if conditions worsen and staffing allows.

What ODOT will handle

If additional support is needed, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is responsible for state and federal highways that run through the Tulsa area.

What drivers should know before heading out

Even with only light precipitation expected, officials urge drivers to stay alert and give road crews extra space. Trucks may move slowly or stop frequently while applying brine.

Winter weather shelters open across Tulsa

The City of Tulsa has opened several shelters for anyone needing a warm place to stay.

The following locations are operating 24/7:
