Jay Stansfield speaks out on Birmingham City new stadium amid St Andrew’s verdict

Birmingham City face Watford at St Andrew’s this evening with Jay Stansfield looking to add to his goal tally

The 62,000-capacity stadium, located in Bordesley Green, will sit at the heart of the planned Sports Quarter development.

Jay Stansfield is targeting being part of a Birmingham City team that walks out at their new Powerhouse stadium when it eventually opens.

The 23-year-old, who is Blues’ leading scorer with eight Championship goals so far this term, is set to face Watford at St Andrew’s @Knighthead Park this evening.

The game comes just ten days after Tom Wagner unveiled the design for the club’s new super-stadium which will be the centrepiece of the £3billlion Sports Quarter project.

Nicknamed The Powerhouse, featuring 12 striking chimneys and with a capacity of 62,000 it is hoped the new ground will be ready in time for the 2030/31 season.

Everyone at Blues is aiming for the club to be in the Premier League by then – and Stansfield, who would still only be 28, says he too hopes to be part of things.

In an interview with Sky Sports he said: “The noise at St Andrew’s is special. We get 28,000 every week making unbelievable noise. Even away they’re incredible.

“To think we could have an even bigger stadium with more fans is exciting. I can’t wait to walk out in front of everyone in a huge new ground. It will be great for the city and community, not just the football.

“There’s a lot of expectation around the club at the moment, so for us it’s about going out, doing our best and playing our football.

“We’ve done that really well. We’ve had results we haven’t been pleased with, but that’s part of the Championship. We’re finding our feet now and clicking together as a team and hopefully it continues.

“It’s a great place to come into every day. The facilities are top level and that brings the best out of the players.

“When I first got the call about Birmingham and the project was laid out, there was no looking back. Everything that was promised has been put in place.

“There’s big expectation, but the club is moving in the right direction and it’s a privilege to wear the badge every week.”

Stansfield has already made 109 appearances and scored 45 goals for Blues. He is in his third season at the club after suffering relegation in his loan campaign before joining permanently the summer before last.

He signed a seven-year contract which could still be running if the stadium build goes according to plan.
