Elementary teacher accused of threatening to “chop” colleague with paper cutter

Stewarts Creek Elementary School teacher has been charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment after authorities say she threatened another teacher inside the school in November, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

Rutherford County Sheriffs’ Office detectives reported that the incident happened on Nov. 4.

Jill-Marie Haynes, a Stewarts Creek first-grade teacher, had allegedly confronted a colleague for entering her classroom. According to the report, Haynes followed the teacher into another room, blocked the doorway, and held a paper cutter while discussing “chopping her” and sending her to the emergency room.

The victim told investigators she feared for her safety.

In a written statement to detectives, Haynes said she “made a very poor joke about using a paper chopper,” the report states.

Haynes was booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center the same day and later released on a $6,000 bond. A hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1 in General Sessions Court.

Rutherford County Schools confirmed to FOX 17 News that Haynes was placed on unpaid suspension on Nov. 6 pending the outcome of the sheriff’s office investigation.
